What is Turbo AI?

Lecture recorder and note generator

Price
$19.99/mo$119.88/yr
Free
Free tierTight monthly caps

What you get

  • Records a live lecture and turns it into notes
  • Also takes PDFs, videos and documents
  • Flashcards, practice questions and a podcast from any of them
  • Practice formats: fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice and essay

Turbo AI records a live lecture, transcribes it, and turns it into notes, flashcards, practice questions and a podcast. Its users largely like it, and note quality is not among the common complaints.

What sends people looking elsewhere is almost entirely commercial. Nothing about the price is published on the site, the terms state that all sales are final, and the free tier runs out within days of tight, unstated monthly caps.

What it does well

  • The best live lecture capture on this page, by a wide margin
  • Filters out the chatter around you, so you get the lecture and not the room
  • Rated 4.7 on both the App Store and Google Play. Most reviewers like the notes

Where it falls short

  • The most expensive tool on this page, about $5 a month more than Studley
  • No pricing page anywhere on the site. You find out what it costs at the paywall
  • The free tier is capped tightly enough that it runs out in days. Treat it as a trial, not a free plan
  • Its terms state that all sales are final outside a verified technical malfunction
  • Reviewers report recordings failing to save, and recording stops if you leave the app

YouLearn AI

Video-first: YouTube, lectures and PDFs into notes and quizzes

Price
$20/mo$144/yr$60 per semester
Free
Free tier5 chats and 3 uploads a day

What you get

  • Takes YouTube videos, recorded lectures, PDFs, slides and photos
  • Summaries, chapters, transcripts, quizzes, flashcards and podcasts
  • Web, iOS, Android, plus a Chrome extension that captures Canvas and D2L
  • Over 40 languages

Beats Turbo at

  • It publishes everything Turbo hides: exact free limits, exact prices, a stated 7-day refund window
  • 20% student discount on a .edu address
  • One lecture recording a day even on the free tier

Where it falls short

  • The free tier is tight: 5 chats a day, 3 uploads a day, a 100-page PDF cap and 10 MB per file
  • Pro is marketed as 'unlimited' while its own endpoint returns a 1,000 per day cap
  • Play reviewers report a forced-update loop locking them out
  • The iOS build has not been updated since March 2026

Gemini Notebook

Google's document assistant, formerly NotebookLM

Price
$4.99/movia Google AI Plus
Free
Free tier50 sources, 10 quizzes a day

What you get

  • 50 sources per notebook, 100 notebooks, on the free tier
  • Answers only from your documents, with a citation on every claim
  • Quizzes, flashcards, mind maps, audio and video overviews
  • 50 chats, 10 quizzes and 10 flashcard sets a day, free

Beats Turbo at

  • The free tier is not a demo, and no card is involved at any point
  • Its audio overviews are the best version of the podcast feature in this category
  • Nothing can be lost, because nothing is being recorded

Where it falls short

  • It cannot record a lecture at all, which is the whole reason Turbo exists
  • Web only, so there is no app to open in a lecture theatre
  • No tracking of what you got wrong, and no scheduled revision

Studley AI

Study sets with graded written answers and a paper grader

Price
$14.99/mo$97.99/yr
Free
Free tierOne study set, ever

What you get

  • Flashcards, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks and notes
  • A written test that grades free-text answers for completeness
  • A paper grader that takes an essay plus a rubric and returns a breakdown
  • A photo solver for homework problems

Beats Turbo at

  • It publishes its prices on its own site, which given why you are here may be the point
  • It grades written answers, which Turbo does not
  • Nothing to lose: it drills material you already have rather than capturing it

Where it falls short

  • The free plan is one study set, ever, which is arguably worse than Turbo
  • A photo-to-answer Solve tab sits one tap from your study sets
  • It does not record lectures either

Gizmo

AI flashcards with a real spaced-repetition scheduler

Price
$155.22/yr$13.99/week, no monthly plan
Free
Free tierGated by hearts and timeouts

What you get

  • Flashcards and quizzes generated from your material
  • A real SM-2 derivative scheduler, retuned to recover faster after wrong answers
  • Weights easy formats lower, so a lucky true-or-false does not fool it
  • A hearts and streaks loop built to get you opening it daily

Beats Turbo at

  • The only tool here that decides when you should see something again
  • The daily loop genuinely works at building the habit
  • Price is notably absent from its complaints

Where it falls short

  • No monthly plan at all. Weekly or annual only, which is an awkward commitment either way
  • Recent reviews are dominated by post-update performance problems and login loops
  • Reports of decks disappearing
  • It does not record or transcribe anything

RemNote

Notes, AI flashcards and spaced repetition in one app

Price
$8/mo$96/yr$18/mo for full AI
Free
Free tierUnlimited flashcards, 100 AI credits a month

What you get

  • Notes, PDF annotation and flashcards in one place
  • AI generates cards from your own notes, PDFs and lecture transcripts
  • Spaced repetition brings each card back just before you would forget it
  • Exam scheduler, image occlusion, lecture recorder and an AI tutor chat

Beats Turbo at

  • A genuinely open free tier: unlimited notes and unlimited flashcards, no expiry
  • Your notes become the flashcards, so you are not maintaining two systems
  • Built for long courses. The following in medical school is not an accident

Where it falls short

  • It is a system, not a quick fix. Expect to spend real time setting it up
  • Full AI needs the $18/mo tier. Free gives you 100 AI credits a month, Pro 1,000
  • Its lecture recorder is on the AI tier, and is not a match for Turbo’s
  • Like Anki it drills recall. It will not notice you have misunderstood something
our tool

Akono

A tutor that questions the material instead of capturing it

Price
€11.99/mo€59.88/yr
Free
Free trial3 days, card required

What you get

  • Recording is not the point: your uploaded material becomes a course
  • Tutored sessions where the next question comes from your last answer
  • Anything you misunderstand is recorded and comes back in later sessions
  • Checkpoints per chapter, practice exams, all planned back from your exam date

Beats Turbo at

  • The only tool here where the next question depends on how you answered the last one
  • It teaches you the missing piece mid-session instead of marking you wrong and moving on
  • What you misunderstand stays open across sessions until you can explain it yourself

Where it falls short

  • It does not record lectures. If that is why you use Turbo, pair them or stay put
  • No free tier at all: three days on a card, then €11.99 a month
  • The plan runs across weeks. With one night left, a generated set is faster
  • Weaker for pure calculation drilling, where a problem set or Anki serves you better

How Akono is different

Every other tool on this page hands you a finished set. The notes, the flashcards, the practice questions: all of it is written before you answer the first question, and none of it changes after you do. Get question four wrong and question five turns up exactly as it was, because it was written when the tool knew nothing about you.

That works for capturing a lecture and for memorising. It is a bad way to fix something you have misunderstood, because nothing in the loop ever notices that you have.

Gizmo and RemNote are the near-exceptions, and they deserve the credit. Their schedulers really do adapt. But what they adapt is when a card comes back, not what the card asks. Miss the same card six times and you see it six times, word for word, with nothing in between to explain the bit you keep missing.

A generated set

Turbo, YouLearn, Gemini Notebook, Studley, Gizmo, RemNote

  1. You answer

    You get it wrong.

  2. What happens

It is marked wrong. If you are lucky, the correct answer is shown next to yours.

  3. Next question

The next one in the set. Chosen before you started, with no relationship to what just went wrong.

A tutor working the material with you

Akono

  1. You answer

    You get it wrong.

  2. What happens

The material is not just captured and returned. Your answer decides what happens next.

  3. In between

The gap gets closed on the spot, while the topic is still open.

  4. Next question

It follows from your answer rather than the running order of the notes.

Which one should you pick?

Mostly this comes down to how long you have left.

Every price and limit here was checked against each product's own site, store listing or in-app paywall on 24 July 2026. Turbo's terms are worth reading before you subscribe, since they state that all sales are final.
